Diploma in Psychotherapy (Children and Young People)

Currently the only accredited UKCP Child Psychotherapy training outside of London this dynamic focused and well structured training will equip you to work as a Child Psychotherapist.

About
This course is accredited
by the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and leads to registration with the UKCP as a Child Psychotherapist. On successful completion of the course and training requirements on what is currently the only accredited UKCP Child Psychotherapy training outside of London, you will be awarded the Northern Guild Diploma in Psychotherapy with Children and Young People.
 
A four year part-time training, this dynamic, focused and well-structured training is theory, practice and skills based, and taught from a Humanistic, Integrative and Psychodynamic perspective. In addition to cutting edge theory, you will learn applied arts-based creative methods for working with children and have the opportunity to research your work.

Our senior tutor and Head of Child Psychotherapy training, Jennie McNamara is currently Chair of the UKCP Faculty for the Psychological Health of Children and is well-placed to develop and expand the training alongside developments within the profession.

Aims
•To provide quality, in-depth training leading to professional registration as a Child Psychotherapist
•To train students to a standard that equips them to work competently as a fully qualified professional Child Psychotherapist
•To facilitate personal and professional development
•To offer arts based creative methods training
•To develop understanding of research and cutting edge theory
•To provide community based learning in a friendly supportive environment
•To develop opportunities to specialise in a range of areas of work 

Training Requirements
•Attendance at all training modules
•Prescribed reading 
•Specialist Modules including the following Workshops: TA101(3 days), Sand Tray Therapy (3 days),
Child Protection, Ethics & Legal Issues (3 days), Researching Counselling & Psychotherapy (3 days),
Imagery & Metaphor (3 days)
•Depth Psychotherapy: The Child Within (3 days)
•Infant & Toddler Observations (80 hours over 2 years plus 6 seminars per year)
•Observational Child Mental Health Placement- minimum of 60 hours
•500 hours of formal supervised psychotherapy practice. Including 350 hours with children and 150 hours with adults
•Clinical supervision requirement throughout training
•Ongoing Personal Therapy requirement throughout training
•Written requirements (Pass grade required)
•Oral Case Presentations (Pass grade required)
•Maintenance of personal and professional journal, including client/supervision log
•Brief Research Project into the student’s clinical practice (Pass grade required)

Progression
Students who meet the entry criteria may apply to transfer to the MSc or Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy in Year 3. This provides an academic qualification beneficial to your CV - as well as being a route to professional registration.

Students can also gain a Counselling qualification whilst continuing their Psychotherapy training by Dual Registering any time up until the end of Year 2.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
Students may be eligible to enter training at the appropriate level if they have relevant prior learning/experience.

Entry onto United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy Register
On satisfactory completion of this course students will be eligible for entry on to the UKCP Register as a Child Psychotherapist. Students must ensure that prior learning, their period of psychotherapy training and their post accreditation practice comply with UKCP and HIPC requirements if they wish to be entered onto and remain on this register. From time to time these requirements change. Please note: completion of a course and/or successful completion of the final examination does not lead to automatic inclusion on to the UKCP register.

Entry Requirements
In order to be accepted onto the training programme applicants need to show:
•Graduate level competence. This may take the form of a vocational qualification in a related field, and/or equivalent life and work experience.
•Ability to demonstrate an understanding of therapeutic work with children.
•Relevant experience of working with people in a responsible role, evidenced by a written reference.
•Personal and emotional resilience, the ability to respond to, and cope with challenges.
•Suitable personal qualities and a genuine interest in working with people, evidenced by a written reference.
•Willingness to undergo statutory CRB checks required by law for work with children. These checks can take several months and work with children cannot commence until these are clear.
•A personal value system in keeping with the philosophy of the training, including an open attitude towards all people irrespective of their race, creed, gender, sexual orientation.
•Ability to be flexible, playful and non-defensive.
