Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Evening Course)

  • Two year course
  • One evening per week 5.00pm-9.00pm
  • 34 weeks per year
About
This two year part-time course is accredited by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the BACP accredited Northern Guild Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.  A further year of supervised practice and CPD (Continuing Professional Development) leads to registration as a UKCP Registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.

The course is held on an evening basis (at our Newcastle or Stockton centre) for those who want to study during the week. It is a cost effective, managable training course that will enable participants to apply these skills and competencies to their work situation or to begin a career change into professional counselling working with adults. Systems are in place to support and enable graduates to prepare for registration as a professional Counsellor with the leading professional bodies.

Aims
•To provide quality, in-depth Therapeutic Counsellor training leading to professional registration 
•To train students to a standard that equips them to work competently as a fully qualified professional Therapeutic Counsellor
•To facilitate personal and professional development 
•To develop understanding of research
•To provide community based learning in a supportive and comfortable environment 
•To develop opportunities to specialise in a range of areas of work 

Course Requirements
•100% Attendance at training sessions
•Prescribed reading 
•One three-day Intensive training session per year
•Workshops: TA101(3 days), Using Therapeutic Imagery (3 days), Researching Counselling & Psychotherapy (3 days)
•150 hours Counselling Practice
•50 hours Work Based Learning
•Clinical supervision requirement throughout training
•Ongoing Personal Therapy requirement throughout training
•Maintenance of personal and professional journal, including client/supervision log
•Final Assessment Module (undertaken after all practical requirements have been satisfactorily completed, usually within six months of ending the taught course) 

Progression
Students who want to continue to the Diploma in Psychotherapy (DIP) can Dual Register up until the second term of Year 2. At the end of the year, students will then join the Year 4 DIP group to complete their training. This DIP year may be offered as a weekly evening course, or as a monthly weekend course, depending on demand.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
Students may be eligible to enter training at the appropriate level if they have relevant prior learning/experience.

Entry onto United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Register
12 months following satisfactory completion of this course, students will be eligible for entry on to the UKCP Register as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.

Students must ensure that prior learning, their period of counselling training and their post accreditation practice comply with United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) requirements if they wish to be entered onto and remain on this register. From time to time these requirements change. Please note: completion of a course and/or successful completion of the final assessment does not lead to automatic inclusion on to the UKCP register.
 
Entry Requirements
In order to be considered as an applicant for this training you must have:
•Proven ability to study at a higher educational level. This may take the form of a vocational qualification in a related field, and/or equivalent life and work experience
•Personal and emotional resilience, the ability to respond to and cope with challenges
•Demonstrate some understanding of basic counselling skills 
•Relevant experience of working with people in a responsible role
•Suitable personal qualities and a genuine interest in working with people 
A personal value system in keeping with the philosophy of the training, including an open attitude towards all people
•Willingness to undergo enhanced CRB checks and any other statutory checks required by your placement providers
