Post Qualifying Diploma in Child Psychotherapy & Certificate in Therapeutic Work with Children
Who can apply?
This course is designed for Counsellors and Psychotherapists trained and/or qualified to work with adults, who want to engage in a learning process that will enhance existing knowledge and skills and lead to a formal qualification, the Diploma in Child Psychotherapy or Counselling.
This Diploma will enable candidates to become registered with UKCP as a Child Psychotherapist.
The course is also suitable for professionals working therapeutically with children who want to enhance knowledge and skills but who do not want to go forward for accreditation. Successful candidates in this group will receive a Certificate in Therapeutic work with Children/Young People.
Why apply?
The UKCP have resolved that in the near future the psychotherapy with adults register will include an annotation or marker to show which psychotherapists have defined competencies to work with children and young people. UKCP believes this system to be in the interests of public protection, ensuring as far as possible that parents, children and young people will thus be able to choose a therapist who is qualified and safe to do this specialist work.
Individual Learning Plan
A flexible Individual Learning Plan is agreed with each applicant depending on their existing knowledge and experience. Applications are invited at any time in the academic year as starting points are determined by the individual learning plan.
Course Requirements
• Attendance at specific training modules chosen by the candidate in conjunction with the lead tutor
• Ongoing clinical supervision of at least two child clients at a ratio of 1:6 hours
• Agreed reading and some written assignments. Written work will be kept to a minimum, in recognition of that already undertaken
• Initial enhanced criminal records checks
• Membership of the Northern Guild
• Candidates must abide by UKCP ethical guidelines for work with children and young people
Syllabus
Training will follow the UK Council for Psychotherapy Standards of Education and Training for work with Children and Young people. The syllabus will be designed to bring together former studies and experience with the learning outcomes specifically for working with children and young people not already covered.
The emphasis will be on building knowledge, skills and experience in this field founded on an understanding of applied attachment theory, neuroscience, non-verbal communication and creative methods including sand tray, play therapy, imagery and metaphor.
Methods of Assessment
• Self and Peer assessment
• Presentation of a portfolio of work with children and young people demonstrating the use of creative methods
• Presentation of an oral case study
• Submission of a log of training demonstrating how the candidates meets the criteria for the award they are seeking
• Penultimate and final assessment by a supervisor including completion of a supervisor’s assessment report
UKCP Registration
Graduates of this training will be eligible for registration with UKCP as a Child Psychotherapist on successful submission of a portfolio demonstrating how they meet UKCP requirements.
Costs
•Annual Membership of NGP £60.00
•Training £110.00 per day
•Infant observation seminars £30.00 an hour
•Clinical supervision £55.00 - £65.00 an hour (Group supervision can be arranged which can significantly reduce supervision fees)
•Final Assessment & marking fees will be determined on an individual basis due to the different requirements for each participant
•Initial CRB check
•Initial interview fee £90.00
