Diploma in Psychotherapy - Adult
Leading to Registration as a Psychotherapist with the UK Council for Psychotherapy.
This 4 year part time vocational course is designed for those seeking to become a professionally Registered Psychotherapist.

Structure of Training
Each module is taught over 10 weekends, October to July. Over the course of the training students must complete 4 additional 2/3 day workshops and can choose when to fit their schedule.
Students may choose to transfer to the MSc or Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy in year 3 as this provides a route to professional registration as well as giving an academic qualification which is beneficial to your cv.

- Dialogue in the Therapeutic Relationship: Attunement
- The Transferential Relationship: Transference And Counter transference
- Life Tasks, Life Challenges: A Developmental journey from infancy to old age
- Working with anxiety and depression (integrating CBT) Introduction to DSM diagnostic categories
- The Therapeutic Relationship in Context: culture and diversity
- Memory, Phenomenology and Therapeutic Relating.
- Ethics and Professional Practice in Therapeutic Relating: identifying and resolving dilemmas.
Year 3
The Presence of the Past in the Therapeutic Relationship
- Mapping The Therapeutic Relationship – Overview of developmental theories
- Planning for Depth Counselling and Psychotherapy
- The Neuroscience of Attachment and development of self
- Developing the Relationship: Being with the client
- Developing the Relationship: Recognising Transference Processes and Working with Defences.
- Working with Separation, loss, letting go, and developing Autonomy.
- Therapeutic Error and Failure, Legal Issues in Psychotherapeutic Work.
- Management of complex clients: the links to context.
- Therapeutic Work with specific issues:
- Suicide and Impulsivity: Self Mutilation, Substance Misuse, Violence.
- Eating Disorders.
- Post-traumatic Stress.
- Adult sexual issues
Year 4
Integrative Work and Dimensions of the Self
- Introduction to Standard Diagnostic Categories and Approaches
- Axis I disorders: Anxiety and mood disorders
- Axis II Disorders: Personality Structure and Attachment Deficit.
- Diagnosis and treatment of Axis II disorders: Cluster A (Paranoid, Schizoid and Schizotypal)
- Diagnosis and treatment Axis II disorders: Cluster B (Antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissistic)
- Diagnosis and treatment Axis II disorders: Cluster C (Avoidant, dependent, Obsessive-Compulsive)
- Differential diagnosis of complex personality structure (including multiple diagnoses)
- Therapeutic strategies for complex disorders
- Working through and impasse resolution
- Relearning and ending
Criteria for Accreditation with UKCP
Candidates will be eligible to have their names put forward for the UKCP Register of Psychotherapists when they have satisfactorily completed all training requirements including the following:
- Completion of all course modules
- Completion of all course assignments to ‘pass’ standard
- 500 hours of formal supervised psychotherapy practice
- Observational Mental Health Placement- minimum of 70 hours over 6 months.
- Ongoing personal psychotherapy for the duration of the training
- Completion of a final written assessment consisting of a reflective overview of professional development and practice and an extended written case study which has been awarded a “Pass” grade.
- Satisfactory completion of final clinical assessments (pass awarded).
Entry Requirements
In order to be accepted on to the training programme applicants must have:
- Graduate level competence. This may take the form of a relevant degree or equivalent vocational qualification in a related field, and/or equivalent life and work experience
- Relevant experience of working with people in a responsible role
- Suitable personal qualities and a genuine interest in working with people
- A personal value system in keeping with the philosophy of the training, including an open attitude towards all people irrespective of their race, creed, gender, sexual orientation
- We have a policy of flexibility and will be pleased to discuss with candidates whether and how they meet our entry requirements. In some circumstances candidates who do not currently meet all the criteria may be accepted on to the course.
