Leads to registration with the UK Council for Psychotherapy as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor
This 3 year part-time course is designed for those seeking to become professional counsellors as well as for individuals who may wish to develop and expand counselling skills within either work or vocational settings. Students who meet the entry criteria may convert to an MSc at the beginning of year 3.- The provision of quality, in-depth Psychotherapeutic Counsellor training leading to professional registration
- Training students to a standard that equips them to work as a fully qualified professional Psychotherapeutic Counsellor

Accreditation
Students, who complete the training programme, meet course requirements and pass their final assessments will be awarded the BACP Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and will be eligible on completion of additional practice hours for immediate entry onto the UK Council for Psychotherapy Register as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. This training is accredited by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP).Structure of Training
Each academic year consists of 10 weekend modules. Over the course of the three years students must complete 3 additional 2 day workshops and can choose when to fit their schedule.Course Syllabus

The Therapeutic Relationship: Developing the Model
- The Therapeutic Relationship: an Integrative Approach.
- Dialogue in the Therapeutic Relationship: Attunement.
- The Transferential Relationship: Transference and Countertransference.
- Life Tasks, Life Challenges: A Developmental journey from infancy to old age
- Working with anxiety and depression (integrating CBT) Introduction to DSM diagnostic categories
- The Therapeutic Relationship in Context 1: Couples and families
- The Therapeutic Relationship in Context 2: culture and diversity.
- Memory and Therapeutic Relating.
- Phenomenology and the Therapeutic Relationship.
- Ethics and Professional Practice in Therapeutic Relating: identifying and resolving dilemmas.
Year 3
The Presence of the Past in the Therapeutic Relationship
- Mapping The Therapeutic Relationship – Overview of developmental theories
- Planning for Depth Counselling and Psychotherapy
- The Neuroscience of Attachment and development of self
- Developing the Relationship: Being with the client
- Developing the Relationship: Recognising Transference Processes and Working with Defences.
- Therapeutic Error and Failure, Legal Issues in Psychotherapeutic Work.
- Working with Separation, loss, letting go, and developing Autonomy.
- Management of complex clients: the links to context.
Therapeutic Work with specific issues:
- Suicide and Impulsivity: Self Mutilation, Substance Misuse, Violence.
- Eating Disorders.
- Post-traumatic Stress.
- Adult sexual issues
Training Requirements
To progress from one year to the next students must complete
- Attendance at taught modules
- Prescribed reading
- Written requirements [pass grade]
- Maintenance of personal and professional journal, including client/supervision log
- On-going personal therapy
- Continuing supervised counselling work with clients
Entry Requirements
In order to be considered for this training as an applicant you must have:
- Proven ability to study at a higher educational level. This may take the form of a vocational qualification in a related field, and/or equivalent life and work experience
- Demonstrate some understanding of basic counselling skills
- Relevant experience of working with people in a responsible role
- Suitable personal qualities and a genuine interest in working with people
- A personal value system in keeping with the philosophy of the training, including an open attitude towards all people.
- Willingness to undergo enchanced CRB checks and any other statutory checks required by your placement providers.
