Msc in Integrative Psychotherapy

MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy with Adults or Children

This 2-3 years part time Masters programme is designed for experienced counsellors and psychotherapists seeking to expand their knowledge base. Course participants will have previously undertaken a counselling or psychotherapy training and will view this course as an opportunity for advanced study.

Aims

  • To facilitate students personal and professional development in such a way that they have the confidence to develop the therapeutic relationship
  • To inspire students to engage with developments in theory, practice and research
  • To develop students competence in engaging with theoretical and clinical debates across modalities and with professionals in related fields
  • To enable students to analyse and evaluate the interaction between social factors, client presenting problems and therapeutic interventions
  • To provide the resources to support students in engaging with research
  • To encourage students to become involved with the wider psychotherapy community

Structure of Training

Modules 1 and 2 are taught over 10 weekends commencing October to July.
Module 3 is taught in 2 blocks of 3 days and 2 days.

Module 1

The Therapeutic Relationship Module
This module takes the therapeutic relationship as an integrating principle in advanced studies in psychotherapy. Aspects of this relationship are studied in depth together with ethical and practice issues.

The Presence of the Past in the Therapeutic Relationship

  • Mapping The Therapeutic Relationship – Overview of developmental theories
  • Planning for Depth Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • The Neuroscience of Attachment and development of self
  • Developing the Relationship: Being with the client
  • Developing the Relationship: Recognising Transference Processes and Working with Defences.
  • Working with Separation, loss, letting go, and developing Autonomy.
  • Therapeutic Error and Failure, Legal Issues in Psychotherapeutic Work.
  • Management of complex clients: the links to context.
  • Therapeutic Work with specific issues:
  • Suicide and Impulsivity: Self Mutilation, Substance Misuse, Violence.
  • Eating Disorders.
  • Post-traumatic Stress.
  • Adult sexual issues

 

Module 2

Integrative Work and Dimensions of the Self
Understanding and Developing the Relationship

Integrative Work and Dimensions of the Self

  • Introduction to Standard Diagnostic Categories and Approaches
  • Axis I disorders: Anxiety and mood disorders
  • Axis II Disorders: Personality Structure and Attachment Deficit.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of Axis II disorders: Cluster A (Paranoid, Schizoid and Schizotypal)
  • Diagnosis and treatment Axis II disorders: Cluster B (Antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissistic)
  • Diagnosis and treatment Axis II disorders: Cluster C (Avoidant, dependent, Obsessive-Compulsive)
  • Differential diagnosis of complex personality structure (including multiple diagnoses)
  • Therapeutic strategies for complex disorders
  • Working through and impasse resolution
  • Relearning and ending
  •  

 Module 3

Imagery and Metaphor in Therapeutic Work
The theory and application of imagery and metaphor to therapeutic work.

Module 4

Research Workshop – 3 day module
Develop and expand psychotherapy research skills.

Dissertation
Students complete a dissertation in an area of interest.

Entry Requirements                            
In order to be accepted on to the training programme applicants must have;

  • Ability to study at a higher academic level. I.e. graduate level competence. Evidence of competence in working with clients
  • Completion of 240 hours of training in counselling or psychotherapy
  • To have undertaken 80 hours of individual personal therapy
  • Be working with a minimum of 4 individual clients weekly
  • A personal value system in keeping with the philosophy of the training, including an open attitude towards all people irrespective of their race, creed, gender, sexual orientation or any circumstance
